Advantages and Disadvantages of Ceramic Braces
Braces are an effective and affordable treatment option for people with a variety of malocclusions (including excessive overbite, underbite, crooked teeth, gaps between teeth, and crossbite). Ceramic braces blend in better with the color of natural teeth, so they are less noticeable.
However, they are more fragile than metal braces and may take longer to straighten teeth. They are also more expensive, but many insurance companies cover part of the cost.
Ceramic Braces: A Discreet Option for Straighter Teeth
Ceramic braces require special care to prevent staining. They are prone to staining from foods and drinks like red wine, marinara sauce, coffee, and some fruits and veggies such as raspberries and blueberries. These stains can leave behind an unattractive “blotchy” appearance to the tooth enamel and/or the ceramic brackets, so it is important to brush after every meal and before bed, as well as floss daily and rinse with mouthwash regularly. In addition, it is important to visit the orthodontist as scheduled so that we can replace any stained elastic ties or broken brackets.
While many older teens and adults choose ceramic braces for their cosmetic appeal, they are not for everyone. Ceramic brackets are best suited for mature teens or adult patients who understand the limitations of their diet and activity while wearing them. Moreover, these patients are more likely to follow consistent oral hygiene and avoid dietary temptations that can lead to staining or broken brackets.
