The breed’s broad, wedge-shaped head and wide, deep eyes give it an intimidating look, but Staffies are squishy sweet on the inside and will quickly cement their place in your heart. Their short, stiff coat comes in black brindle, red brindle, fawn, and white with black or blue markings. Their ears are small, V-shaped and typically half erect. Staffies can have normal-looking eyes, but their lenses can begin to cloud up in early childhood. Responsible breeders routinely test their stock for hereditary cataracts.

Because of their tremendous stamina, Staffies need plenty of exercise. This can be as simple as a daily walk or jog, but they also love to play fetch, run through the yard, and even climb hills. They are heat intolerant, so you should avoid overworking them in warm or humid weather. Their short coat requires little grooming, but should be bathed or dry shampooed regularly to keep it shiny. Allergies are common in this breed, but are usually caused by proteins found in the saliva of licking dogs.
